A Restaurant Style Margarita, At Home

This Tipsy Housewife House Margarita is the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and citrusy flavors. This is thanks to a combination of fresh lime juice, Rose’s Lime, Grand Marnier, and silver tequila. Shaken ice cold and served over plenty of ice. It’s a simple cocktail that tastes just like one from your favorite neighborhood Mexican restaurant.

As many of you know, we spend part of our time in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. While there are plenty of wonderful things to eat up there, authentic Mexican food can be a little harder to come by. A friend of ours had recently moved up from Chicago and was missing those classic neighborhood tacos and margaritas. When we came up for Memorial Day weekend, I promised him a backyard taco night complete with my favorite homemade margaritas.

He volunteered to supply the liquor, so I sent him a shopping list. We spent the evening shaking up batch after batch of these margaritas. This recipe has been my go-to for years! It’s perfectly balanced, not too sweet, not too sour, and strong enough to put a little pep in your step. Made with simple ingredients and served ice cold, it’s the kind of margarita that always disappears fast.

Grand Marnier

One thing that really makes this margarita special is the Grand Marnier. While many margarita recipes call for a less expensive orange liqueur, I prefer Grand Marnier. It adds a richer, smoother flavor to the cocktail. It is made with cognac and bitter orange essence. It brings a subtle warmth and depth that balances the tart lime juice and tequila beautifully. It also adds a natural citrus flavor without making the drink overly sweet. This is one of the reasons this margarita has remained my go-to recipe for so many years.

What Else Can You Use?

If you don’t have Grand Marnier on hand, you can substitute an equal amount of Cointreau, Triple Sec, or another orange liqueur. Grand Marnier is my preference because it adds a richer, smoother flavor to the margarita, but any good orange liqueur will work.

Tequila Recommendations

The good news is that you do not need an expensive tequila to make a great margarita. Since you’re mixing it with citrus and other ingredients, I usually reach for a good-quality silver tequila that is reasonably priced and easy to find. Some great options include Espolòn, Olmeca Altos, El Jimador, and Tres Agaves. If you want to spend a little more, Casamigos and Patrón are also excellent choices. The most important thing is to use a 100% agave silver tequila, which will give you a smoother, cleaner flavor and a much better margarita than the bargain bottles on the bottom shelf.

Sour Mix

I know some margarita purists prefer to make everything completely from scratch, but I have always been a fan of using sour mix for convenience and consistency. My favorite is Mrs. T’s Sour Mix because it provides the perfect balance of sweetness and citrus flavor without requiring a lot of extra ingredients. Combined with the fresh lime juice and Rose’s Lime in this recipe, it helps create a margarita that tastes fresh and balanced while still being incredibly easy to make for a crowd

The Best Salsa Pairing

If you’re serving these margaritas, you absolutely need some chips and salsa to go with them. My Chi-Chi’s Mexican Restaurant Style Salsa is inspired by the smooth, flavorful salsa I grew up eating at Chi-Chi’s. This was one of my favorite places to go for Mexican food. It’s easy to make, perfect for dipping tortilla chips, and tastes just like the restaurant-style salsa you’d find on the table while waiting for your tacos and margaritas. I’ll link that recipe here if you’d like to make the full Mexican restaurant experience at home.

Midwest Mexican

If you’re looking for something to serve alongside these margaritas, my Midwestern Taco Salad is always a crowd favorite. This is the kind of taco salad many of us grew up eating at family parties, potlucks, and summer gatherings, loaded with seasoned beef, crunchy chips, fresh vegetables, and a flavorful dressing. It pairs perfectly with a cold margarita and is easy to make ahead for feeding a group. I’ll link that recipe here as well.

This easy homemade margarita combines silver tequila, Grand Marnier, fresh lime juice, and Rose's Lime for the perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors. Shaken ice cold and poured right back over the ice, it's the kind of simple, refreshing cocktail that's perfect for summer afternoons, taco nights, and backyard gatherings.

Ingredients

  • Ice *I make these in a solo cup and fill the cup with ice
  • 2 oz silver tequila
  • 2 oz sour mix
  • 1 oz Rose's Sweetened Lime Juice
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz Grand Marnier
  • 2 fresh lime slices, plus more for garnish

Instructions

  1. Fill a standard 16-ounce red Solo cup with ice and pour the ice into a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add the tequila, sour mix, Rose's Lime Juice, fresh lime juice, Grand Marnier, and lime slices to the shaker.
  3. Shake vigorously for 20 to 30 seconds until the shaker is very cold.
  4. Pour the margarita and all of the ice back into the Solo cup or your favorite margarita glass.
  5. Garnish with an additional lime slice and serve immediately.

Tipsy Tip

If you like your margaritas a little stronger, add an extra splash of tequila. If you prefer them sweeter, add a little more Rose's Lime Juice. For a salt rim, run a lime wedge around the edge of the glass and dip it into coarse salt before pouring your margarita.
