Skillet Cobbler

An Easy Autumn Dessert

Cobbler in a cast iron skillet.

If I have said it once, I have said it 100 times: I can’t bake! So when Original Tipsy and my cousin both mentioned a three ingredient Skillet Cobbler my Grandma used to make, my ears perked right up.

Three ingredients?

No mess?

I am IN!

So I made this recipe and holy cow, my mind was blown by how good it was. Thereés a full, printable recipe card at the end of this post, though youéll barely need it.

Easy Peasy

Trust me, I know how intimidating baking can be. With a lot of types of cooking you can adjust as you go, tossing more spices in or draining and adding liquid as needed.

Baking is much stricter. If you donét get the proportions of the ingredients and the temperature and cook time correct you can end up with some kind of big blob or an inedible slab.

This dish will taste like youére a master pastry chef but with much less effort, skill, or risk.

I wonét tell if you wonét!

Additional Ingredients

While I love the simplicity of a “cobbler” with only three ingredients, you can add in other delights according to your preferences.

Got a whole bunch of leftovers from apple picking? This is the perfect place to put them along with other fall fruits.

Apple slices

You can create a version for any season youéd like. Peach for summer or that classic spring fruit for spring.

Thatés right, dragonfruit. We all know it, thatés the official fruit of spring.

To be clear, thatés a joke. I doubt dragonfruit would actually be all that good in this dish but feel free to prove me wrong!

Toppings

As with any cobbler, the potential for toppings is only limited by your imagination.

Whipped cream and a bowl of berries.

While whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream is a classic choice, you could consider making your own caramel sauce if youére worried this recipe was too easy and youére looking to challenge yourself.

Skillet Cobbler Recipe

Cobbler in a cast iron skillet.

The easiest dessert you'll ever make. And it's tasty too!

Ingredients

  • 1 box of Yellow Cake Mix
  • 2 sticks of Butter
  • 2 large cans of Pie Filling, about 4 C. total

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter and spread some of it in the bottom of a skillet or a baking dish. I use my cast iron skillet.
  2. Sprinkle half the cake mix in the bottom of the dish.
  3. Spread all the pie filling on top.
  4. Top with the rest of the cake mix and pour the remaining butter all over the top. Mix it a little bit with a fork.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until you see the cobbler bubbling and brown.
  6. Serve by itself or topped with whipped cream or ice cream.

This was so delicious that Mr. Tipsy and I literally stood at the counter eating it straight out of the skillet. If you need a dessert that will wow your guests, this is it!
