The Tipsy Family Secret Recipe

BBQ sauce in a pot with a whisk

Barbecue Sauce With A Twist is a zesty, doctored up BBQ sauce using a legendary grocery store sauce as a base and pantry staples to make it even more special. This sauce is great as a glaze on your chicken, ribs, and chops or as a great dipping sauce for your tenders and nuggets.

This barbecue sauce and my Mom’s Oven Baked Ribs are two of the very first recipes I ever made. The barbecue sauce uses the Original Open Pit Barbecue Sauce along with some pantry items I always have on hand.

I also use this recipe to glaze my Crispy Pork Chops. It is a great sauce to have on hand for all your dipping needs.

Try it on chicken wings for a snacking delight. This is easy to mix up and stores in the fridge for weeks, although it won’t last that long.

There is a short recipe card at the end of this post. You can print, save, or pin this recipe card.

There is also a “hands free mode” that you can use if you want to keep the recipe up on your device while you are cooking. There is not a lot to say about this recipe, as it is pretty straightforward.

I will highlight a few of the classic ingredients that I use in this recipe for those who may need help sourcing the ingredients.

A bottle of Open Pit BBQ sauce

Open Pit

Open Pit is a barbecue sauce my family has used my whole life and before I was even born. I recently learned that Open Pit is Chicago thing and that brands of barbecue sauce are regional, just like mayonnaise.

My uncles live in Napa Valley, CA and when they come to town, they buy Open Pit to bring back to California with them. I am happy to report that they seem to have expanded where they sell this sauce.

I also see that they sell on Amazon.

One of my fondest childhood memories is sitting around the table at my Busia’s house eating beef sandwiches from our favorite beef stand. We would ALWAYS put Open Pit Barbecue sauce on the beefs.

The beef stand was nearby in Berwyn, Illinois and it is called Novi’s Beef. It is still around and still pretty dang good.

We did not eat out a lot when I was growing up, so this was always a great treat.

I also want to mention I am in no way sponsored by Open Pit, it is just a product I love. I actually am not currently sponsored by ANY brands, so anything you ever see me mention is all out of genuine love for the product.

You will see that I sometimes have very specific, but easily accessible products I use in some of my recipes. Most products will be pictured and linked so you can easily find them.

A tub of Worcestershire powder

The Magic Of Powders

I use a few powders in my recipes. If you have been a Tipsy follower you know of my long time love of tomato powder.

I have many recipes on the site using it. Another powder I keep on hand and use in this barbecue sauce is Worcestershire Powder.

The powder adds an in-depth, more concentrated flavor that I really enjoy. My Mom didn’t use the powder when she taught me to mix up this sauce, but it is a great addition.

I do not have a brand I am loyal to. Check Amazon for options and read the reviews.

The one pictured above is one I buy often as it is usually on sale on Amazon. I have a bunch of recipes linked on my site that use this powder.

Just search “Worcestershire Powder” on my site.

Barbecue Sauce With A Twist Recipe

Barbecue Sauce With A Twist Recipe

My family has always used this doctored up barbecue sauce for all our barbecue needs. This sauce is great on chicken, ribs, pork chops, and brisket. It is also great as a dipping sauce for your wings and chicken tenders. The recipe calls for Original Open Pit Barbecue Sauce dressed up with things like soy sauce, minced onions, and more.

Ingredients

  • 2 bottles of Open Pit Original Barbecue Sauce (18 ounces each bottle) *product pictured in post
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire Powder or 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce *powder pictured in post
  • 1 tablespoons of dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon of onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar or honey
  • 2 teaspoons of chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients until combined. Make sure you whisk it really well if possible.
  2. This sauce can be served immediately but it is better if it sits for at least four hours. This sauce is good in a covered container for a week or two.
  3. If you want to add dried minced onion, you can also add this to the sauce by mixing them with the soy sauce, let them rehydrate in the soy sauce, then add to the sauce. I recommend letting it sit in the sauce for four hours before serving. Meaning if you add the dehydrated onions, do not serve right away.
  4. Use as a glaze, a baking, or dipping sauce.
