What Kind Of Beef To Use For Skewers?

I used beef tenderloin for these skewers but you can use sirloin as well. My local store had the beef tenderloin on sale so I used that but a sirloin would be just fine.

What WILL make a difference in this recipe is the thickness and size that you cut your meat. If they are smaller, thinner pieces the meat will marinate much faster.

If the pieces you cut are thicker, they will need more time. This is also true for when you cook the meat. The smaller the pieces, the less time they will need to cook.

A container of Chinese Five Spice

Chinese Five Spice

A lot of people are confused by or never heard of Chinese Five Spice. It is typically a mix of five spices which include, cinnamon, star anise, cloves, fennel, and Sichuan pepper.

This spice has a lot of flavor and it gets stronger as it sits. If you haven’t tried it before I would start small and taste as you go.

If you know you do not like one of the spices in Chinese Five Spice, you can make your own five spice and omit the flavor you do not like.

You could call it four spice!

I would recommend giving the five spice a try, though. If you think you do not like one of these flavors, you may find that it tastes different in this recipe.

You can find the Chinese five spice in almost any grocery store and you can also mix up your own with recipes you can find with a simple google search.

Most Delicious Beef Skewers

A white plate with 6 to 8 short wooden skewers on it with marinated beef tenderloin chunks

These most delicious beef skewers are pieces of tender beef marinated in a rich blend of soy sauce and aromatic Chinese five spice, threaded onto skewers, and expertly grilled to perfection. This mouthwatering dish combines the savory umami of soy sauce with the complex warmth of Chinese five spice, creating a harmonious balance of flavors that will leave your taste buds craving for more.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs of beef, I used beef tenderloin filets, you can also use sirloin
  • 1/2 cup of soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup of seasoned rice vinegar
  • 1/2 of a small white onion, grated
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger paste or grated ginger (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons of Chinese five spice
  • 1 teaspoon of granulated garlic
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried chili pepper flakes (you can omit this if you do not want to make this spicy)
  • 2 teaspoons of white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil (or cooking) oil of your choice
  • *all spices are adjustable to your preferences

Instructions

  1. Cut your beef up into bite sized pieces, remember that the size of your beef is going to determine cook time. refer to the post for more clarification on beef. Mine was cut into approximately 1.5 inch cubes.
  2. In a large enough bowl to hold the marinade and the beef, add your soy sauce, rice vinegar, grated onion, optional ginger paste, Chinese five spice, refer to the post for more information on this spice, black pepper, sugar, granulated garlic, onion powder and the optional dried chili flakes. Give this all a good whisk.
  3. Add your beef to the marinade and refrigerate for 4 hours. The thickness and size of your beef will determine how long the beef should marinate. refer to the post for more clarification on this.
  4. If you are using wooden skewers, soak them in water for about 15 minutes, this is so they do not burn when grilling.
  5. When the beef has marinated for the proper time, remove the beef from the marinade. I slightly pat it dry with some paper towels. Save the marinade and add it to a small sauce pan. Bring the marinade to a boil and let it simmer, stirring occasionally for 15 minutes. Then let it sit on a low heat setting until you are ready to serve. This is a pertinent step, as there is bacteria from marinating that needs to be cooked out. DO NOT SERVE THIS SAUCE WITHOUT COOKING IT FIRST.
  6. After you pat the beef dry, thread them onto the skewers. I do about 6 pieces of meat for each one. The size of your beef will determine how many skewers you get from this recipe.
  7. Place the skewers on a plate and brush them on all sides with the vegetable oil.
  8. Let them sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes if they haven't already, then place them on a hot grill to cook. These do not take long to cook. They will need to be turned two or three times while cooking. You will know they are ready to turn when they lift easily from the grill.
  9. If you are using a meat thermometer, I usually pull these from the grill when they are at 125 degrees.
  10. Let them rest under foil for at least 5 minutes before serving. Serve with the extra sauce for dipping.
