Ranch Dressing But Make It Lucky

Shamrock Ranch dressing surrounded by chips

I wanted a simple dressing for St. Patrick’s Day that had the creamy tang of classic Thousand Island dressing but with an easy Midwestern shortcut. This Tipsy version of Shamrock Ranch Dressing & Dip uses a packet of Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning mix along with minced pickles, ketchup, and a few pantry spices to create a tangy, pickle-forward sauce that is perfect for sandwiches, sliders, or dipping fries.

Being from the Midwest, I am a huge lover of ranch dressing. I have a little ranch hack that makes a great base dressing, but for St. Patrick’s Day I wanted something with the tangy, pickle-forward flavor of Thousand Island dressing, so I started playing around in the kitchen and this creamy ranch-style version is what came out of it.

It turned out fantastic.

This dressing also makes a great dipping sauce for crispy onion rings and hot French fries. The creamy ranch base with the tang of ketchup and pickles gives it that classic diner-style flavor that tastes perfect with salty, fried foods.

It is a fun way to add a little St. Patrick’s Day flair to a basket of fries or a plate of golden onion rings. I simply ate it with potato chips!

Use It For The Stack

If you are making my Stacked Reuben Appetizers with Caraway Butter, this dressing is a great option to use in place of the traditional Thousand Island dressing. The creamy ranch base, tangy ketchup, and little bits of pickle pair perfectly with the corned beef, Swiss cheese, and the warm caraway butter in that recipe.

You can spread it right on the sandwiches or serve it on the side as a dipping sauce for the Reuben stackers, which is honestly one of my favorite ways to enjoy them.

Make It Personal

Here are some ways you can add to this recipe that take the flavor in some new and exciting directions!

Chicago Deli Version

If you like a dressing that leans a little sweeter like the kind you might get at a classic neighborhood deli, this version is a great option. Adding a bit of sweet relish along with the minced dill pickles creates that familiar deli-style balance that tastes wonderful on sandwiches, burgers, or even as a dip for fries.

Reuben Style Version

Since this dressing was originally inspired by the flavors of Thousand Island, it only made sense to create a version that leans into classic Reuben sandwich flavors. A pinch of caraway seeds and a little extra pickle flavor gives this variation that signature deli taste that pairs perfectly with corned beef, toasted rye bread, or even drizzled over roasted potatoes.

Northwoods Version

For a slightly heartier, more savory twist, this Northwoods version adds extra grated onion and a touch more of smoked paprika for deeper flavor. It has a little extra kick and richness that makes it especially good as a dipping sauce for fries, fried fish, or anything you might serve up at a casual gathering.

Maybe even consider adding a heaping amount of horseradish!

How Long Can She Stay

This dressing will keep well in the refrigerator for about 5 to 7 days when stored in an airtight container. Because it is made with mayonnaise, sour cream, and a packet of Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning mix, it actually gets even better after sitting for a few hours as the flavors have time to blend together.

Just give it a quick stir before serving since the ingredients may settle a little as it rests in the fridge.

  1. In a bowl whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, ketchup, and pickle juice until smooth.
  2. Add the ranch seasoning packet, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder and mix well.
  3. Fold in the minced pickles, onion, and chives if using.
