Onion Bake with Butter and Herbs
A Social Media Sensation

This Onion Bake with Butter and Herbs is a side dish that will have you craving it. This can also be eaten as an appetizer with a great toasted bread and some goat cheese.
I personally just ate it all on its own and it was delicious.
The onion boil has gone viral on social media and for good reason. This version uses whole, sweet onions, butter, and a delectable blend of spices and herbs.
The Recipe Card
There is a full, printable recipe at the end of this post. If you are an experienced cook, you can scroll on past the next couple of paragraphs.
If you are not an experienced cook and need a little clarification, I have provided some helpful insights in the next couple of paragraphs along with my charm and wit! LOL!

Hollowed Out
Pictured above is how the onion should look hollowed out. I used a small steak knife to make this hole for the butter.
You can also use a paring knife or an apple corer. You want to try to make sure you do not make a hole all the way THROUGH the onion.
You just want to provide a basin for the butter to stay in. If you happen to go all the way through the onion, do not fret, it will be just fine.

Season With Your Heart
As you can see(son) I seasoned very well. I would use the Cajun spice and the paprika and maybe the black pepper sparingly but if you really like those things, go to town.
You want to make sure to get the seasoning in the butter hole.
I never in my life imagined using the word “butter hole!”
Anyway you cannot over season this onion, so do not worry.
Cajun Seasoning
One of the ingredients on my recipe card calls for Cajun Seasoning. Many people, including me, love Tony Chachere’s Seasoning which can be found everywhere.
It has a little kick to it so give it a try before you pile it on your onions. You can also use any all purpose seasoning that you wish.

Every Oven Is Different
As I always say, every oven bakes differently. The time for cooking may vary for every person.
The size of the onion will also affect cooking time. Bigger onions will increase it and smaller ones will decrease it.
I also always suggest checking the true temperature of your oven. I wrote a post on Checking Your Ovens Temperature because ovens can get highly inaccurate with what the dial says versus what the true temperature is for your oven.

How To Eat
I think these onions are the perfect side dish to any beef roast. What I had in mind for this side dish was making my Beef Tenderloin or my Rib Roast recipe to serve as the main.
I also just ate this onion on its own. Serve this with a crusty, toasted bread and some goat cheese on the side for a delicious appetizer.
Onion Bake with Butter and Herbs Recipe

These onions are delicious eaten on their own, or served with some crusty bread and goat cheese on the side. This is a perfect side dish for any roasted meats.
Ingredients
- 6 medium size to small size sweet onions
- 1 stick of salted butter (8 tablespoons)
- Garlic Salt
- Onion Powder
- Black Pepper
- Dried Parsley
- Cajun Seasoning
- Paprika
- 6 to 8 cloves of garlic
- A couple of shakes of soy sauce
- *measurements for spices and herbs are to be eyeballed
Instructions
- Cut the tops and ends off the onions and then peel the onion, also remove the single outer layer of the onion.
- Use a small knife or an apple corer to core out the center of the onion. You don't want to go all the way through the onion bottom. Leave a space for the butter to sit inside the onion. *pictured in post
- Cut the butter into small cubes.
- Place the onions in a small baking dish, the smaller the better. They can be touching.
- Season the onions on the top and in the hole you created really well with the seasonings. Use the paprika and black pepper sparingly, but you can really go to town with the others.
- Press 2 to 3 cubes of butter into the holes you created.
- Melt the remaining butter that you didn't press into the onion. Season with the same seasonings.
- Give this a good stir and pour this over each onion. Add the cloves of garlic to the bottom of the baking dish. Then add a couple of shakes of soy sauce to the top of each onion.
- Cover the dish with one single piece of foil.
- Bake covered at 400 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove the foil at 45 minutes, and bake again for 15 minutes. *Every oven will bake differently, keep an eye on the onions the first time you bake this. The size of your onion will also make a difference on cook time.
- Remove the onions when they are still intact but soft and the top is golden brown.
- When ready to serve, add a garlic clove to the center of each onion and pour some of the butter sauce over the top.
- This can be served as a side dish to any roasted meat. This is also a great appetizer, served alongside some crusty, toasted bread and goat cheese.

Another Viral Recipe
I love making the viral social media recipes I see on apps like Tik Tok. The Ramen Noodles, pictured above, is another favorite recipe I learned from social media.
It is the perfect recipe to make when you don’t know what to make for dinner. Be aware, it IS addicting.
