Cheese Tartlets with Bacon Onion Jam make an elegant yet easy appetizer. The bacon jam is simple to make with just a little pinch of patience while the bacon and onions cook.

Also, it’s so fun to say. “Tartlets!”

You can customize the jam by using any fruit or vegetable flavor you like. You can also customize the cheese by using any variety you like.

These are delicious hot, but also hold up really well on an appetizer buffet.

Jam, bacon, and onion sizzling in a pan

Jam On It

This recipe is VERY easy to make, so do not overthink it. You just have to have patience when cooking the bacon and the onions so you have the optimal flavor and texture.

I like to use a good quality bacon for this recipe since the bacon is the star of the show. The cheese and jam are a chance to experiment and have fun.

Would a salty cheese mixed with strawberry jam be best? Or what about a brie with marmalade?

The world is your tartlet!

Canned Biscuits For The Win

I like to use the Pillsbury canned biscuits for this recipe. They are so easy and versatile to use.

They also puff up nicely when baking. Make a little indentation so that when they par bake, there is a little divot for the cheese to go in.

I recommend using a mini muffin tin for this recipe, as they bake up so cute and delicious. I also recommend shredding your own cheese for this recipe as I think it melts better than already shredded cheese.

I have this link here to my Amazon affiliate shop if you need a mini muffin pan or a cheese grater.

*Affiliate means Amazon pays me a small commission for sharing the link. It does not cost you anything extra.

I also use this muffin pan for my delicious Cheesy Wontons appetizer that I know you will love.

A small, empty bottle of honey whiskey held over the cooking mixture
This is the little honey whiskey I used for the jam. The alcohol cooks off so it isn’t alcoholic but you can omit this ingredient if you choose.

I do not let the tartlets get too brown on the top, I flip them over to serve and the bottom is more well done.

Easy and delicious. The only hard part will be making enough for your guests.

I guarantee they won’t be able to get enough!

Cheese Tartlets with Bacon Onion Jam make an elegant yet easy appetizer. The bacon jam is simple to make with just a little pinch of patience while the bacon and onions cook. You can customize the jam by using any flavor jam you like. You can also customize the cheese by using any cheese you like. These are delicious hot, but also hold up really well on an appetizer buffet.

Ingredients

  • 1 can of Refrigerated Biscuit Dough, any variety will do, I used the butter ones. I used about 3 to 4 biscuits from the can.
  • 2 cups of shredded cheese of your choice, I used a white cheddar and I highly recommend you using cheese you grate yourself for optimal melting
  • 1/4 cup approximately of slice chives
  • 4 tablespoons of butter, melted
  • 1 cup of jam or jelly of your choice, I like to use a peach, apricot jam
  • 1 lb of bacon, diced
  • 1/2 cup of sweet onion, diced
  • pinch of black pepper
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • pinch of cayenne
  • *optional, one shot of a honey whiskey, I buy the airplane bottle size

Instructions

  1. To make the bacon jam, dice up your raw bacon and add it to a skillet. Cook this slow until the bacon is nice a crispy, then remove from the pan with a slotted spoon onto a plate with some paper towels so this can drain.
  2. I drain most of the bacon grease from the pan, but leave a couple of tablespoons of the bacon fat in the pan. You can use some paper towels to soak this up. Use caution as the grease will be hot.
  3. Add your onions to the pan and let these onions caramelize low and slow. Give them time until they are golden brown.
  4. Next add the jam of your choice to the pan, and the whiskey of you are using the honey whiskey. The alcohol in this will cook off so it won't be alcoholic. Use a whisk to whisk the jam on a low heat until it is a glaze. Season with the black pepper, cinnamon and the cayenne.
  5. Turn off the heat and add your bacon, tossing to coat.
  6. Add a couple of tablespoons of chives, save the rest of the chives for garnish,
  7. You can make the jam a day or so in advance.
  8. To make the tartlets, use a small muffin pan, spray it with a non stick spray.
  9. Heat your oven to 375 degrees.
  10. Take your biscuit dough from the container and separate the biscuits. Cut each biscuit into 8 ish smaller triangles. You just want the dough to fit into each muffin cup. Size can vary it doesn't have to be exact.
  11. Press the biscuit dough triangle down slightly in the center into each hole of the mini muffin tin.
  12. Brush them all with melted butter.
  13. Bake for about 10 minutes, every oven will bake differently so keep and eye on these when you first make them.
  14. After 10 minutes carefully reomve the tray and add a sprinkle of the shredded cheese of your choice to each little muffin.
  15. Bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, keeping an eye on it. The tops with the cheese do not get super golden brown but the bottom part will be.
  16. Let cool for 5 minutes and then remove from pan, flipping each tartlet over so the more golden brown part is on the top and the cheese is on the bottom.
  17. Warm the bacon jam and add a little to each tartlet , then I added a drizzle of the jammy part.
  18. Top with some chives.
  19. These are addiciting so make a lot.
